What is your role?

I am Your Life’s patron

What is your background?

I’m a former British gymnast and have won an Olympic Bronze Medal. I am a triple World Champion, a six-time European Champion, a Commonwealth Champion and seven-times consecutive National Champion. I was also made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.

In 2007 I graduated from Liverpool John Moores University with 2:1 in Sports Science. Along with my friend and fellow Olympian, Steve Parry, I set up a company called Total Gymnastics to provide the opportunity for as many children as possible to take up gymnastics.

Why are you supporting Your Life?

If I hadn’t studied persevered with Maths and Physics I wouldn’t have been able to study the degree I wanted, a degree that has helped me enormously in my post-gymnastics career in running my own business.

What could make the biggest difference to the Your Life campaign?

I think helping them make the connection with what they are doing the classroom and what they can do in the world of work. For girls to see role models that make them realise STEM is as much for them as it is boys!
