Draw My Life: Elon Musk

Elon Musk was a multi-millionaire by the time he was just 28!

How did he start making money?

Born in South Africa in 1971, Elon Musk loved reading science fiction books and used to dream of travelling to Mars. He also loved technology so much that he taught himself computer programming and at the age of 12, ended up selling a computer game he had coded to a magazine for $500!

He moved to America where he got a degree in Economics and Physics and was about to start a PhD in Physics when two days in, he dropped out to start up his own business with his brother. This turned out not to be such a bad decision as just four years later, he sold that company for £200 million, making him a multi-millionaire at the age of 28! He followed that with another company that became PayPal, and sold that for £100 million!

What do you do with millions of pounds?

By now, Elon Musk had enough money to last a lifetime but instead saw it as an opportunity to explore his dream of space travel. If he was going to make it a reality though, he would need a spaceship. So, he collaborated with a guy who had been trying to build rocket engines out of his garage – it’s literally rocket science!

This collaboration was the beginning of a new company, SpaceX. Never forgetting that things needed fixing on earth first and especially global warming, Elon joined another company, Tesla Motors, who produce electric cars. If they become popular enough, they could make a real impact on the environment. Everything went well until 2008 – the worst year of his life – when Elon’s rockets failed to launch, and both SpaceX and Tesla were losing millions of pounds.

Never give up!

Elon Musk didn’t give up – Tesla Motors finally started making a profit, and has now sold over 100,000 cars. The next SpaceX rocket launch was finally a success and marked the first step in his dream of making humans a multi-planetary species. Today, he is still working on lots of diverse projects, from helping build the biggest solar panel factory in the world to developing safe artificial intelligence, and even designing futuristic trains that use magnetic levitation to travel faster than the speed of sound.

Make the impossible possible!

The billionaire personality of Elon Musk is actually what Robert Downey Jr based the character of Tony Stark in Ironman. They’re both saving the planet – but Elon is doing it for real which is way cooler! And just like Tony Stark, he wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful without his physics background. It helps him make the impossible possible and dream up ways of advancing humanity. Can’t get better than that!
