Inaugural Inspiration Week bringing STEM jobs to life

Held from November 14th-19th  Inspiration Week is Your Life’s newest initiative to encourage teenagers studying their GCSEs to carefully consider their A Level options ahead of making their final choices. Six dedicated days of activity in this new STEM event informed teenagers about the positive impact of studying Maths and Physics on their future, ultimately inspiring them to go on to take these subjects at A Level.

The week included:

Inspiration Week Live!
Inspiration Week Live! saw inspirational campaign ambassadors and volunteers talk with students about how to get into STEM careers in on online chat forum, delivered by Class Careers. Overall we had 849 chats with 64 volunteers taking part across two days. And the results? An impressive 10% uplift in those now planning to study Maths and Physics and 16% better informed about A Levels! Thanks to our ambassadors, brilliant sponsors who took part and of course, dunnhumby for hosting.

Gamewagon rolls into the Skills Show
The Gamewagon team were also instrumental in supporting Inspiration Week by running activities at the Your Life stand at The Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC, attended by 75,000 young people. The teams managed to directly engage with 1,911 students at the workshops, boosting confidence and transforming attitudes to STEM A Levels by offering fun, achievable, problem-solving tasks that demonstrate these subjects are not ‘too-hard’.

Your Life’s Inspirational women story aims for the Sky
Your Life’s survey on the most inspirational women of all time was a major news story in the lead up to Inspiration Week with our patron Beth Tweddle featured in radio stations across the country and Sky News. Scientist Marie Curie topped the poll with Florence Nightingale second.

Powerful partnerships
A link up with The Female Lead, saw us create ‘Female Inspiration Day’ on the Wednesday 16th November of the week, with us publishing a series of top interviews by influential young women working in STEM first produced by the Female Lead, as well as an all girls’ trip to Tata Consulting Services (TCS). Meanwhile The Science Museum sponsored our social media competition to capture an inspirational image from the world of STEM.

Best School Trip
Your Life organised four Best School Trips across the week in this well established STEM event. As well as TCS, this included Coca Cola and EDF Energy.

Additionally Shell and IBM hosted a great STEM event during the week on Tuesday 15th November. Fifty 11 to 14-year- old’s took part in a stimulating “Future of Energy” challenge. The intention was to get them thinking about the role technology can play to create clean and efficient energy solutions. The students then pitched their ideas to a Dragon’s Den-style panel.
