STEM School Finder: Your Life launches free App helping people find schools delivering subjects for the best UK jobs

Parents, Teachers & Students can now find the subjects and schools best aligned with industry

  • Revealing new insights into 2,500 Secondary Schools change rankings of many when considering STEM
  • Schools delivering more STEM A-Levels (not just A Grades) are key to the best and biggest range of jobs now and in the future (£30,000 annual premium for studying Maths A-Level)
  • ‘STEM School Finder’ is free and identifies the best schools near you from just your postcode

Your Life, the campaign to boost Maths and Physics take up post-16, has launched a free online tool to enable parents to find the schools that deliver results in the subjects employers want and where there is job growth. Via a postcode search tool ‘STEM School Finder’ ranks and displays schools in relation to their ability to deliver A*-B performance in STEM subjects. Powered by world-leading data scientists at Starcount, STEM School Finder is the first in depth ranking of England’s official published results table of 2500 secondary schools, based on STEM performance.

A predicted 7.1 million UK jobs will rely on science skills by 2030 – a 1.3m increase on today’s number.*  Your Life’s STEM ranking tables for schools shows that many schools shifted by more than a thousand places compared to the overall rankings.

STEM School Finder enables parents, teachers or students to use:

  • An address/postcode to view a display of best schools in their area on a map.
  • Use a filter to find schools based on STEM output (percentages or actual numbers of students).

According to Edwina Dunn, Your Life Chair and Starcount CEO: “I am delighted that parents finally have access to a free and easy to use tool that reveals which schools are best able to prepare students for the jobs and skills they need for now and the future.” She continued: “With a STEM shortfall of 40,000 jobs a year and growing, employers are crying out for students with these skills. However the relentless focus on grades, to the exclusion of subjects, is skewing the decision-making of young people away from key science subjects.”

The launch of School Finder follows Your Life’s other digital product, Future Finder, a web-app for teenagers showing which A Level subjects lead to which jobs. At the launch event, Your Life revealed that Maths and Science provided a potential wage premium of £30,000 per year. This was based on insight from Global Management Consultancy A.T. Kearney, relating to the A-Levels most in demand for 430 key jobs.
